Garden Update: Strawberry Popcorn

I went out to the garden this weekend and picked my first to ears of corn from the popcorn variety I planted back in June. This corn is a much smaller variety than sweet corn, so I have been waiting for the right time to harvest some and see how it turns out. After researching the best time to harvest popcorn, I discovered that you should let it dry as much a possible on the stalk and at least wait until the ear dries out and looses most of its green leaves.

Paul’s Secret to Self Discipline

Gaining Christ through the gospel — gaining all of God and all his promises to his cross-reconciled children for all eternity and losing all sin and all death and all hell and all their accompanying miseries — was the reward that gave Paul his laser-like focus and fueled his self-discipline. - Jon Bloom, The Secret to Self-Discipline

Using Gratitude to Fight Negative Thinking

Essentialism and Self-Discipline

I’ve been pondering the idea of “Christian Essentialism” lately, and one topic that’s come to the forefront of my attention is self-discipline. In order to effectively put your energy towards one goal, you need the willpower and discipline to stay focused even when things get boring and mundane. I’ve realized that this is an area where I’ve grown very lazy, and I’ve just recently begun to see the effects in a number of areas of my life.

Christian Essentialism

Just last week, I finished reading Greg McKeown’s Essentialism, a book I received as a birthday gift earlier this year. I had heard an interview with McKeown on the Art of Manliness podcast last year, and the idea of “essentialism” had hit a chord with me right at the time I was considering dumbing down my phone and simplifying life. The book also came on the heels of the first read-through of Deep Work by Cal Newport, and it seemed like a good follow-on, albeit with some repetition.
