Hardening off plants, again

Well, it’s that time of year again - seed starting happened a month or more ago, and the little plants under the lights in my basement are starting to get bigger and ready to go outdoors. For the past few days, I’ve been putting a small set of flowers out in the sun on my back porch for a couple hours, and they’re getting ready to plant. But today, I also brought out some herbs that will go in the garden: basil and dill, mostly. They only get a few hours in the sun today, but I expect they’ll be ready to plant in a few days.1

The tomato plants I started indoors aren’t doing that great; they have yellowing leaves and are sort of scraggly. I’m not sure if it’s too much water, not enough airflow, or something else. They’re definitely getting plenty of light. I hope they’ll survive another week or so, and then I’ll set them outside to harden off, too.

  1. I’m rather impatient when it comes to hardening off my plants. Usually this means they get a bit more sunburned than usual, but it doesn’t seem to matter whether I carefully increment by one hour per day, or just give them a few days in a row of sun exposure outside. ↩︎
